5/22/2023 0 Comments Jack of Hearts by Kat BaxterAndrew Tell narrates all books in the series superbly. The books do not have to be listened to in order indeed, Book 6 titled And Then She Was Gone should be read first followed by Book 1 titled Girl Jacked followed by Books 2, 3, 4 ,5 and then 7. I love the Jack Stratton series and I highly recommend it. Stupid Cupid strikes again in a collection of opposites attract, steamy-sweet, Valentine’s Day love stories from your favorite romance authors. The main characters are ex-cop Jack and his girlfriend Alice (Alice is not called Replacement for the first time in Jack of Hearts). Jack of Hearts is a sweet and steamy curvy girl romance featuring a smoking hot virgin hero and buxom pink-haired artist. Author Greyson writes about some sympathetic but flawed main characters and he develops them brilliantly. The novels also have more romance, but not sex, than most written by male authors. The series dwells in the light and fun part of the mystery/thriller genre. It has become one of favorite series and Christopher Greyson has become one of my favorite authors since the audio versions of some of the novels were first released five months ago. Jack of Hearts is Book 7 in the Jack Stratton series. A new and wonderful Jack Stratton Mystery Thriller

And why is there always room for dessert at the end of a huge meal? And why did I just come into this room anyway? Instead, Idiot Brain presents a comedic discussion of the brain that usually centers around the stranger things the brain does, especially the processes that make us do peculiar things. What makes Idiot Brain so wonderful is that it’s not a simple, linear, boring discussion of the brain with explanations starting from a description of a neuron and developing into more complex behaviors (as a textbook often does). His popular science book Idiot Brain: What Your Head is Really Up To is well-researched, well-written, and highly recommended for anyone interested in learning about how the brain works, fails to work, and even works against you. chose to describe all that the brain does to make you amazing, he did it in a uniquely humane and entertaining way. Your brain is the most remarkable thing about you because it makes you you. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Paint Me Like I Am by WritersCorpsI remember when I / felt like the whole world / Stopped." Adolescents have been given the opportunity to write from their souls. The painful feelings reflected in the poems make the reader realize that these are kids who have often seen, heard and/or experienced life beyond their young years: "I remember when my first crush died of a / Drive-by. "Friendship" and "Furious" are sample titles of chapters, which also reflect main poems in these areas. These poems were often inspired by assignments to help the students develop a springboard for their creativity, and they divide the book into chapter-like sections. This slim little volume of poems by "at risk" teenagers who participated in creative writing classes sponsored by the nonprofit group called WritersCorps is a powerful voice in the world of poetry today. I found these little stories more to my liking. For me, these were cute, quaint stories but didn’t interest me nearly as much as her other two books. The book then skips ahead several years to directly after Betty’s failed marriage and her coming home from the chicken farm to live with her mom and siblings, bringing her two toddling daughters. This book starts off with Betty’s earliest years and all those school-year pranks and hi-jinks her sister Mary organized. Her older sister Mary was always getting the younger kids to do what she wanted, either by trickery or by simply assuming they would do so and telling them all the reasons it’s in their best interest as well. This book is set after her tales of the chicken farm (captured in The Egg and I) and covers her various job fiascoes before and after her stint in a tuberculosis sanatorium (as told in The Plague and I).Betty is the second oldest child in a family of 4 daughters and 1 son. Betty MacDonald returns us to her humorous world, this time during the Great Depression in Seattle. The ending is so moving it had me in tears. This is a story of growing up, admitting mistakes and talking things through, brilliantly told. There’s even a hint at a first romance developing and other fantastic characters like a kicking kangaroo, terrifying turtles and an orangutang – you’ll have to read it yourself to discover what they get up to! I really liked how Jake helped others recognise the positive traits of others who were being being denigrated by fellow peers. It also deals with the issue of bullying and shows how Jake is helped by peers and teachers as well as his own ingenuity to deal with this. It is a story of coping with tragedy, grief and loss, showing how differently he, his father and sister do so. Through his dreams he learns to face his fears and starts to develop strategies to help himself come to terms with everything. Suppressing his grief has resulted in Jake having anger issues and very vivid dreams, ones in which he is aware he’s dreaming and is able to manipulate some of the events in them. Jake is twelve years old, having problems coping with the untimely death of his Mum which happened four years earlier and being bullied at the Middle School he attends. This is targeted at Middle Grade readers but, I have to say, I believe it will appeal to older readers, too – I found it an emotive and very moving read. In my opinion, there was so much more that could have been done with this. I wished the characters and/or plot had been flushed out more. Unfortunately with Bingo Love I got a healthy dose of neither. I like a good mix of character and plot-driven books. And I say this now because once you read the review you may think I didn’t like it – but I did. It was a good pique your interest in a potential Sapphic romance. My Thoughts: Let me just say now, I did enjoy Bingo Love. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Emma donoghue haven reviewsThis is something that I thought might have been explored in the New York Times book review of Akin. It feels like a missed opportunity that could have been built into the structure of the book. Where my observations are less favourable of Emma Donoghue's Akin are regarding the substantial number of unaswered questions and 'maybe' scenarios.) I felt a little bit the same about what happened in the inbetween years of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale and Testaments!) As mentioned we only get a small insight into what happens to Michael's parents, and there is little to indicate that that this will be thoroughly explored. On a slightly more universal level it reveals how change is a good thing and how regeneration of spirit and life interest can appear when it is least expected. The relationship succesfully shows how despite the two generation gap, Michael and Noah have more in common than either might have imagined. As far as book reviews go, my comments are mixed, but overall favourable.Īkin is a story about an 80 year old, retired Chemistry professor, Noah Selvaggio who reluctantly takes guardianship of his great nephew Michael, whose mother is in jail, possibly for a crime she didn't commit and whose father has died, perhaps of an overdose. A passing interest in Science would be an added bonus as there are even amusing Science jokes thrown in as Donaghoe is clearly either very knowledgable about Chemistry or has done her research well. Emma Donoghue's Akin is a great reading choice for anyone who is interested in exploring family relationships. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Book now is not the time to panicFrankie is still grappling with the meaning of the poster decades later.Īngie Kim, author of the novel Miracle Creek, and Gwen Kirby, author of the short story collection S*** Cassandra Saw, joined us to discuss the magic and “analog vibes” in this touching book.īe warned!
